100 microsecond sleeps averaged 140 microseconds, indicating roughly 7x resolution loss. Precision dropped significantly with a much wider variable distribution.

Down at 10 microsecond delays, returned sleeps averaged 52 microseconds5x longer than specified. Precision varied wildly from 10 to 1000+ microseconds. Only random correlation to target times.

Ultimately the tests confirm kernel developer guidance:

  • Sub-millisecond accuracy falls off rapidly
  • Variability increases exponentially
  • Under 10 microsecond performance is fully unreliable

So while on paper nanosleep() treats nanoseconds as discrete units, hardware and kernel software constraints in practice prevent reliably distinguishing sleeps smaller than 1000 microseconds or 1 millisecond.
